Presented by Andy Workman
NHTA Senior Lecturer & Specialist CPD Trainer
Smoking cessation has long been associated with hypnotherapy, but supporting someone to stop smoking – or vaping – involves far more than simply reading a standard script and hoping that one approach will work for everyone.
The way people use nicotine has changed considerably. Alongside traditional cigarette smoking, practitioners are now increasingly meeting clients who vape, use both cigarettes and vapes, have moved from smoking to vaping, or find themselves using a vape almost automatically throughout the day.
And, of course, no two clients arrive with exactly the same story.
One person may associate smoking with stress or relaxation. Another may light a cigarette almost entirely through habit and routine. For someone else, vaping may have become something they barely notice themselves doing. Previous attempts to stop, beliefs about nicotine, emotional triggers, social situations, confidence, motivation and fear of life without the habit can all play a part.
This practical 3½-hour CPD with Andy Workman will explore how hypnotherapists can move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and work more flexibly with the individual person in front of them.
Andy’s work has its foundations in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, while his many years in practice have led him to develop a broader, integrative way of working. This workshop will reflect that approach, bringing together Solution Focused principles with a range of therapeutic ideas and techniques that can be adapted to the needs, patterns and motivations of each client.
During the workshop, Andy will explore:
- what may sit behind an individual client’s smoking or vaping pattern
- the relationship between nicotine dependence, habit, routine and learned associations
- some of the important differences between smoking and vaping
- how vaping can create different patterns of use from traditional cigarette smoking
- carrying out a useful smoking or vaping consultation
- exploring what the behaviour appears to provide for the client
- identifying triggers, routines, associations and automatic behaviours
- understanding previous attempts to stop and what can be learnt from them
- motivation, readiness for change and strengthening the client’s own reasons for stopping
- using Solution Focused questioning within cessation work
- integrative therapeutic approaches for changing established patterns
- reframing beliefs and associations around smoking and vaping
- practical ways of approaching cravings and urges
- helping clients prepare for situations they previously associated with smoking or vaping
- the role of hypnosis within an individualised cessation approach
- future pacing and helping the client develop a clear picture of life beyond the habit
- supporting confidence in becoming and remaining smoke-free or vape-free
- understanding slips and relapse without turning them into failure
- helping clients build strategies for maintaining change
- working responsibly, ethically and within our professional scope.
The emphasis throughout the morning will be on practical therapeutic thinking – helping practitioners understand not simply what technique to use, but how to decide what may be most useful for the particular client sitting in front of them.
Whether you already offer smoking cessation work and would like to refresh and broaden your approach, or you have previously felt unsure about working with smoking and vaping, this CPD is designed to help you develop greater confidence, flexibility and understanding.
