Eating Disorders: How Hypnotherapy Can Make a Difference

Every client’s story is unique, but for many, the struggle with food feels deeply personal and incredibly isolating. Eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, affect over 1.25 million people in the UK. Yet many suffer in silence, unsure where to turn for support or even unaware that their behaviours fall under the category of disordered eating.

As hypnotherapists, we’re often in a position to help clients navigate these challenges, offering tools to create meaningful and lasting change. The beauty of hypnotherapy lies in its ability to go beyond the surface, delving into the subconscious to reframe negative beliefs and foster healthier patterns.

Imagine a client sitting across from you, overwhelmed by guilt after binge eating or compelled to restrict food as a way to feel in control. They’re stuck in a cycle they can’t escape, and their relationship with food and their body feels like a constant battle. Hypnotherapy offers a way forward - not by forcing change, but by gently guiding the mind to embrace new, healthier ways of thinking and behaving.

One example of transformative work comes from a client, referred to here as Jayne, who worked with one of New Horizon Training Academy’s therapists. Jayne had struggled with binge eating disorder for years and had tried various therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and counselling, but felt unable to break free from the cycle of guilt and overeating. Over the course of hypnotherapy sessions, combined with tailored NLP techniques like anchoring and reframing, Jayne uncovered the subconscious patterns driving her behaviour. Guided visualisations helped her reframe her relationship with food, while specific strategies empowered her to manage urges and shift her focus away from self-blame. By the end of her sessions, Jayne regained a sense of control and self-compassion, describing hypnotherapy as “the missing piece” in her recovery journey.

Eating disorders aren’t just about food. They are tied to complex emotions, past traumas, and societal pressures. Hypnotherapy allows us to address the deeper subconscious drivers that underlie these behaviours. It’s not just about stopping a behaviour; it’s about giving clients the tools to understand their triggers, let go of self-blame, and rebuild a positive relationship with themselves.

But where do we, as hypnotherapists, fit into the bigger picture? That’s a question Martin Furber, a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Hypnotherapy and a dedicated advocate for mental health, will explore during his exclusive CPD workshop on understanding eating disorders on January 11th via Zoom.

Martin brings years of expertise as a clinical hypnotherapist and lecturer, with a passion for fostering resilience and well-being. Known for his engaging and compassionate teaching style, his workshops empower therapists with actionable skills and a deep understanding of the issues their clients face. This event promises to be transformative for professionals seeking to enhance their practice and better support clients and families.

The course delves into topics such as neuroscience, practical techniques, and the nuanced role hypnotherapists play in recovery. Attendees will explore the similarities and differences between eating disorders, learn to adapt hypnotherapy techniques to individual clients, and gain tools to empower carers. With a focus on moving away from traditional weight-loss narratives, Martin will teach strategies to connect with clients who may not even recognise they need help.

When registered for the workshop, attendees will receive a workbook two days before the event, with additional materials shared afterward to reinforce the lessons. Fast-paced breakout exercises, practical tools like urge surfing, and Martin’s real-world case studies make this a truly interactive and impactful experience.

With the New Year upon us, many are thinking about food, weight, and resolutions. For those struggling with eating disorders or disordered eating, however, this time of year can be overwhelming. As hypnotherapists, we have the opportunity to offer a different kind of support - one that focuses on healing the mind and fostering self-compassion.

If you’re ready to deepen your understanding, gain practical tools, and make a bigger impact on your clients’ lives, this workshop is for you. Spaces are limited, so don’t wait to secure your spot.
